Assembly okays 8 bills as autumn session ends

SHILLONG, Sep 22: The five-day autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly came to a close on Friday, paving the way for the passage of eight significant bills that promise to shape the state’s future.
The Finance Minister, Conrad Sangma moved the Meghalaya Appropriation Bill (No. III), 2023, thereafter which Education Minister Rakkam Sangma moved the Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
The Rajital University (Repealing) Bill, 2023 was passed.  It may be noted that the CM had earlier clarified his stance on repealing this saying, “The Private University Commission that we have that regulates the private universities have also written to the said university several times asking for their current status, and no satisfactory reply has come from their end. Hence, after following due process, the cabinet has approved the proposal to pass an ordinance to repeal the Act.”
The Meghalaya Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed on Friday.
The MDA government amended some of the original provisions in June 2021 by issuing an ordinance (Meghalaya Goods and Service Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021.
Thereafter, Meghalaya Lokayukta (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed.
The Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya (Member’s pension) (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed.
As per the amendment bill, the Assembly has proposed to reduce the qualifying tenure of 2 years and 6 months as contained in the proviso to Section 3 (1) of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly (Member’s Pension) Act, 1977.
Thereafter, the Meghalaya Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2023 after some nomenclature changes the amended bill was passed today.
In conclusion, the National Law University of Meghalaya (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed.
