Guwahati, Sept 28: In a move that is aimed at boosting telecommunications and connectivity in the region, Union minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), G. Kishan Reddy will virtually launch 5G applications in the Northeast and inaugurate a 5G experience centre at Tech City, Bongora, near here on Friday.

The inauguration is in sync with the vision set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the golden jubilee celebration of North Eastern Council (NEC).

The Prime Minister, during his address at the golden jubilee celebrations of NEC on December 18, 2022, emphasised on development of the Northeast region and the need to work on the “eight foundation pillars” for accelerating progress in the region.

One of the major pillars emphasised was 5G connectivity for job creation, attaining other socio-economic developmental goals and meeting the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) 2030 targets in the North East Region.

Official sources said that the 5G project is being executed by AMTRON in collaboration with various government agencies such as the Ministry of DoNER; department of telecommunications; Telecom Sector Skill Council; School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi; Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi; Design Innovation Centre, UIET, Punjab University and ALIMCO.

Notably, the NEC-funded project of 5G applications in the Northeast Region, with its hub at AMTRON, Guwahati, has been established at a cost of Rs 14.96 crore.

Apart from contributing to human resource capacity building through 5G labs, the project will showcase on a pilot scale thematic use cases in healthcare, improved access to digital educational content, bamboo and cane artisans and crafts persons and agriculture use cases.
