World Heart Day observed by USTM’s Physiotherapy Dept.

Guwahati Sept 29: The Department of Physiotherapy, under the School of Allied Medical Sciences of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), marked World Heart Day today with an informative workshop focused on ‘Precautions against Death During Exercise Amongst Youth and Athletes.

The workshop featured an insightful keynote address by Prof (Dr) Pranab Jyoti Bhattacharyya, Head of the Department of Cardiology at the Cardiothoracic and Neurosciences Centre, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati, according to a Press release.

Dr. Bhattacharyya delivered a lucid and comprehensive talk on the subject, shedding light on the concerning issue of sudden death during or immediately after exercise in young
individuals and athletes. Dr. Bhattacharyya highlighted that to prevent sudden death in
athletes, pre-screening and other preventive measures must be rigorously followed. His
expertise and insights were invaluable in raising awareness about this critical issue among the participants.

Dr. Habibul Islam, from the School of Allied Medical Sciences at USTM, also addressed the
students and attendees, emphasizing the importance of understanding the causes and
preventive measures related to sudden death in seemingly healthy young athletes. Dr. Pooja Chaudhuri, Head of the Department of Physiotherapy at USTM, warmly welcomed the
participants.

The workshop drew participation from approximately 180 students pursuing Bachelor of
Physiotherapy (BPT) and Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) programs,
along with esteemed faculty members from the Department of Physiotherapy.

The event culminated with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Daisymon Deka, Assistant
Professor in the Department of Physiotherapy at USTM, expressing gratitude to all the
speakers, participants, and organizers for their active involvement in making this World Heart Day observance a success.

World Heart Day 2023 at USTM serves as an important platform for disseminating
knowledge and promoting awareness about the prevention of sudden death during exercise, especially among youth and athletes.
