SHILLONG, Oct 2: The condition of the roads across Meghalaya has deteriorated but the state government is not paying any attention to them and waiting for the rains to subside.
In Shillong, the condition of the roads all along up to Umiam downhill and up towards Laitkor has deteriorated. The condition of other less important roads and bylanes is no good either.
The roads in the state’s rural areas are also in a bad shape. People have started complaining.
A resident said the condition of the roads in Shillong turned worse, not just in one area but all over.
Another person quipped that his new scooty has started making a different kind of sound, thanks to pitiable condition of the roads.
The members of some pressure groups on Monday tore off the newly-constructed Mawmaram-Umsaw road at some points with bare hands, thereby exposing that quality was compromised.
The Dalu-Garobadha Road is one major infrastructure that needs immediate attention. Gone are the days of nearly 100 km joyride between the two towns. The road is now full of potholes and travelling on it has become an absolute nightmare.
The Jowai Bypass has been lying in same deteriorating condition for several months now. The road has been damaged by the movement of overloaded trucks which go to Bangladesh every night to export boulder. This has been going on for the past 3-4 years.
The state government always blames the rains for the deteriorating road conditions in Shillong. And when it is questioned about the bad condition of highways, it passes the bucks on the firms which look after them.
