TURA, Oct 2: Continuing to raise a voice against poor execution of road projects in Garo Hills region, the AHAM, CEB Tura on Monday lamented the delay in the construction of the Dudhnoi-Rongjeng-Baghmara-Dalu road which was initiated with the promise of improving infrastructure and to boost economy, but has instead caused safety hazards, fatal medical emergencies and economic losses to the residents and business of the region.
The issue was raised with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma through a letter.
“I understand that construction projects can face unforeseen challenges and setbacks, but the extent and duration of the delays in this particular project have been unreasonable and unacceptable. It has now been almost a year since the project was declared to have funded by the Centre, and the project seems to have is yet to move an inch and the PIL reports shows that the DPR is still under review till date,” AHAM President Georgeprince Ch Momin said in his letter.
According to Momin, failure to complete the road project in time had led to economic loss, traffic congestion and safety hazards, impacted local businesses, posed environmental concerns, resulted in cost overruns, caused difficulties during medical emergencies leading to loss of lives etc. Momin also added that there was lack of communication to the local residents about the progress of the project which was crucial to manage expectations and reduce frustration amongst them.
Pointing out that all these issues need to be looked into immediately, Momin suggested that a detailed explanation of the reasons for the delays and a timeline for project execution be given, including on steps being taken to accelerate progress.
Momin also sought measures to be taken to mitigate environmental impacts and a network initiation with the local NGOs on the issue, as well as improved communication strategies to keep the community informed about project updates and milestones.
