SHILLONG, Oct 6: The one-man commission of inquiry appointed to investigate the circumstances leading to the firing incident at Mukroh village in November last year, has wrapped up its inquiry in the light of the joint statement issued by the chief ministers of Meghalaya and Assam for winding up the inquiry.
A strong order from Justice (retired) T Vaiphei said: “In the light of the joint statement made by both the Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam for winding up the inquiry, it will not be proper for me to continue this inquiry even for a minute…”
“…Therefore, there will be no further sitting of the Commission, which will die a natural death once the notification in question is issued,” the order said.
Earlier during the inquiry, PN Goswami, the Additional Advocate General of Assam had filed an application for adjourning the enquiry on the ground of personal difficulties and the same was accepted.
Justice Vaiphei said the inquiry was in its final stage as only one police official from Assam was to be examined.
Denying the reports that officials from Assam and Meghalaya were not cooperating, he said both the states were cooperating in the inquiry.
During the CM-level talks held in Guwahati on September 30 on the interstate boundary issues, the two states decided to wind up the Judicial Commission that was instituted to inquire into the Mukroh firing and replace it by an independent inquiry by the CBI.
The CBI will register the case in a neutral place other than Guwahati and Shillong to maintain neutrality of investigation, the joint decision said.
The meeting also decided to end all the prevailing boundary disputes in six areas between the two states by December 31 this year.
