Guwahati, October 25: Ferry services on the Brahmaputra river that run between north and south Guwahati will remain closed on Wednesday for immersion of the Durga idols, officials said.

The Inland Water Transport Department (IWTA) said in its notification that the decision to suspended the ferry services was taken as several puja organizing groups were scheduled to conduct their idol immersion programs on Wednesday, in addition to the absence of jetties.

Although Vijaya Dashami concluded on Tuesday, a large number of Durga Puja committees in the city have chosen Wednesday for idol immersion.

An official said that to avoid any untoward incident during the idol immersion, the ferry services were suspended.

Additionally, it has been revealed that the Brahmaputra river’s declining water levels have made it difficult to operate boats across the river.
