Golaghat SP asked to probe youth’s death

Guwahati, Oct 25: Assam DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh has directed the superintendent of police in Golaghat district to conduct a probe into the death of a youth who was found hanging from a tree on the banks of the Gelabil river in Dergaon on Vijaya Dashami.

Taking to micro-blogging platforn ‘X’, the DGP posted: “Assam Police is deeply distraught at the news of suicide of a young fellow citizen Ajay Dutta of Dergaon in Golaghat district. Chief minister has conveyed to me his grave concern about the incident. SP Golaghat has been directed to inquire into the matter and fix responsibility for the unfortunate incident and also take lawful action as required by law.”

“While conveying our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, I wish to reassure people of Assam that our efforts would continue to make Assam Police a more sensitive and humane police unit,” Singh said.

The victim had, prior to his death, shared a video on social media where he alleged that he was forcibly taken into police custody and assaulted by police personnel.

The incident had triggered outrage in the area with people demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to his death.
