Shillong, November 1: Nokia has taken legal action against Amazon and HP, alleging patent infringement related to the use of Nokia’s video technologies in their services and devices.

As per IANS, Arvin Patel, Chief Licensing Officer for New Segments at Nokia, disclosed that they have initiated legal proceedings against Amazon for the unauthorized utilization of Nokia’s video-related technologies in its streaming services and devices.

The cases against Amazon have been filed in various locations, including the US, Germany, India, the UK, and the European Unified Patent Court. Patel explained that Amazon Prime Video and Amazon’s streaming devices infringe on a range of Nokia’s multimedia patents, encompassing technologies like video compression, content delivery, content recommendation, and hardware-related aspects.

Nokia has also filed cases in the US against HP for the unauthorized use of Nokia’s patented video-related technologies in their devices. The company has a history of negotiating licenses with other technology giants, including Apple and Samsung, and has launched only a limited number of litigation campaigns.

While emphasizing a preference for amicable agreements, Nokia stressed that litigation becomes necessary when companies fail to adhere to established industry rules. Nokia is seeking compensation and royalties for the use of its technologies, which will be reinvested in the development of next-generation multimedia technology. The company has a robust patent portfolio in connectivity and multimedia technologies, driven by extensive investments in research and development over the years.
