SHILLONG, Nov 2: The hostel committee formed to address the grievances faced by the students of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) living in the hostel at the university will meet on Friday.
Informing this here on Thursday, NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) finance secretary Mandor B Diengdoh Swer said two members of NEHUSU will also participate in the meeting.
According to him, they have been raising concern about the hostel conditions, including food quality, poor Wi-Fi access, and infrastructure.
“We hope that the various concerns of the hostellers will be addressed at the earliest,” Swer said.
It may be mentioned that the hostel committee was set up following the signing of the MoU between the NEHUSU and the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University.
In the MoU, it was decided that a NEHU Mess Committee will be established
within two weeks of the signing of the MoU to oversee the quality and standard of food.
The office of the VC has a committee which ensures proper Wi-Fi access to all hostel rooms and initiate necessary repairs and maintenance work for a safe and comfortable environment.
According to Swer, one of the major demands of the students was the need to review and enhance the current marking system to ensure objectivity and equity.
“We were assured that a committee will be formed to look into this matter. We have also impressed that some representative from NEHUSU should be part of this committee. But so far there is no communication from the VC’s office in this regard,” he said.
The JAC, an umbrella body comprising NEHUTA, NEHUNSA and NEHUSU, has challenged the NEHU VC for an “open debate” in front of the media asking him to produce all documents that he claims to possess, supporting the legality of Rohit Prasad’s appointment as senior consultant/technical officer.
JAC chairman Lakhon Kma had stated, “According to the Vice Chancellor’s statements to the media, he is claiming that the appointment of Rohit Prasad was legitimate.”
“Following up on the successful general assembly we conducted on October 31, the JAC decided at our meeting that evening to intensify our agitation by organising another general assembly at 3:30 pm on November 3 in front of the VC’s office,” Kma said.
Additionally, the JAC has made the decision to fortify its opposition to the VC and to exert pressure on him to issue the termination/removal letter to the ‘illegally’ appointed technical officer/senior consultant by November 3.
