NONGPOH, Nov 8: The Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP) officially filed a complaint on Wednesday with the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, Raja Brahma. The complaint pertains to alleged unlawful activities involving the use of explosives for fish harvesting in Thwei Ksih Um and Bora Umlapong areas of Umsiang river on October 27.
The delegation, led by president Bandari Ryntathiang, presented a formal written complaint to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, urging him to initiate a thorough investigation into the matter. CoRP emphasized the gravity of the situation, suggesting that those responsible should face appropriate legal consequences if found guilty. Special emphasis was placed on the alleged involvement of Linus Umbah, who holds the position of headman in Pamlatar and is considered a respected figure within the community.
CoRP expressed concerns that the use of explosive substances for fish harvesting not only results in the significant loss of aquatic life but also sends an undesirable message to the public. The federation underscored the importance of swift and decisive action to address this issue, thereby maintaining community values and safeguarding the local environment.
Furthermore, Ryntathiang issued a strong warning to individuals involved in similar activities, such as using explosives or chemicals for fishing. CoRP explicitly stated that if these individuals are caught in the act, the federation will apply stringent penalties.
