SHILLONG, Nov 13: The United Democratic Party has entrusted its State Election Committee (SEC) to assess the candidature of those willing to contest the Shillong parliamentary seat.
The UDP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) left it to the SEC to take a call on the candidate for the Tura seat in consultation with senior leaders from the Garo Hills region.
UDP member PT Sawkmie, and former Hynniewtrep Youth Council leader Robertjune Kharjahrin, who joined the party recently, and the president of the Khasi Authors’ Society, DRL Nonglait are in the race for the ticket for the Shillong seat.
The CEC also resolved to endorse the decision taken by the leaders of the UDP and the HSPDP at a meeting held earlier in November to work together for the upcoming elections for the Shillong seat.
UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said the CEC has approved the selection of members of the SEC for the MP and MDC elections. “For the Tura parliamentary seat, it was decided to leave it to the SEC and the members of the core committee along with a few senior leaders of the party from the Garo Hills,” he said.
“We have entrusted the SEC to look into matters related to the candidature of those who have expressed their interest to contest from the party. At the same time, the CEC has given direction to all districts and circles to continue strengthening the party and prepare for the MP and MDC elections as well,” he added.
Lyngdoh also said that the party does not yet have anyone willing to contest the Tura seat. “The decision will be taken in consultation with all the stakeholders, including the HSPDP,” he said.
He further said that the party discussed the problems faced by the farmers in the state. A meeting in this regard involving the party’s wing for farmers would be held in the first week of December, he said.
