TURA, Nov 15: A workshop on ‘Medical Nutrition Management of Diabetes Mellitus’ was organised for Medical Officers of West Garo Hills on the occasion of World Diabetes Day on Tuesday.
It was oranised by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, College of Community Science, Tura, in collaboration with the District Medical and Health Officer, West Garo Hills
Dr Bijay Deb Barma, DM&HO, WGH, Tura was the Chief Guest during the inaugural function. A total of thirty nine Medical Officers, District Trainers and MLHPs attended the workshop.
Dr Cynthia R Marak, Diabetologist, Tura Civil Hospital, who was one of the resource persons spoke on the medical management of diabetes. She emphasized on the importance of meal timings, daily exercise and sleep for management of diabetes. She also stated the importance of timely review check-ups.
Dr Mitali Rajkowa, HOD (Nutrition and Dietetics), Ayursundra Super Specialty Hospital, Guwahati, covered the topic on the nutritional management of diabetes. She shed light on carbohydrate counting, the role proteins in the dietary management and the concept of glycemic index and glycemic load.
In-depth discussions followed the technical session where Dr Natasha R Marak, Assistant Professor (FSN), discussed the inclusion of locally available fibre rich foods that can be recommended to the diabetics. The MSc students exhibited cooked food items with details of nutrients that can actually be consumed by the diabetics.
College Dean I/C Dr Namita Singh highlighted the concept of World Diabetes Day celebrations and said that with team effort of doctors, nutritionists and nurses, the right message can be sent to the public regarding the management of Diabetes Mellitus.
