Dhaka, Nov 20: In a surprising turn of events, Shakib Al Hasan, the captain and star all-rounder of Bangladesh’s cricket team, has made his foray into politics, expressing his intention to contest in the upcoming general election on January 7 with the endorsement of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League.
On Saturday, Shakib acquired nomination forms from the Awami League, signaling his bid to run in three constituencies, as reported by AFP. Nasim, a party official, acknowledged Shakib’s political aspirations, stating, “He is a celebrity and has great popularity among the country’s youth.”
However, Shakib’s candidacy hinges on approval from the parliamentary board of the ruling party, led by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Nasim revealed that Shakib aims to run for office either in the capital city of Dhaka or in his hometown district of Magura, southwest of Bangladesh. (Agencies)
