SHILLONG, Nov 22: Condolences continued to pour in on Wednesday over the demise of Standlington David Khongwir, Meghalaya’s first Deputy Chief Minister, who passed away on Tuesday following a prolonged illness.
Former Chief Minister Dr DD Lapang, who is presently the Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya, expressed grief and sorrow at Khongwir’s demise. “SD Khongwir, during his long tenures as the local headman of Mawlai Nonglum, MLA and as the Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, has tremendously contributed towards the overall development and growth of the society in particular and the state in general. The big void created following his passing away would be difficult to fill,” Lapang said in a statement issued here.
Meanwhile, Headman of Police Bazar, SL Singhania, conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family as well as the people of Police Bazar.  “A great footballer and a sportsperson, he was loved by one and all. Being a lover of football, he always witnessed the match in Guwahati in the Bordoloi Trophy tournament of the Shillong team. The people of Mawlai will never forget the contributions of late Khongwir for the welfare of the people,” Singhania said, as he recalled Khongwir as a “personal friend and friend of our family”.
Khongwir, one of the tallest political figures in the state, was also a former MLA of Mawlai.
