SHILLONG, Nov 30: The High Court of Meghalaya on Wednesday stayed the election proceedings of the Headman of the Umsning Patarim village.
The election was scheduled on Thursday.
While hearing a petition filed by one Babul Ryntathiang who was removed from the post of Headman on the ground that his Sanad (appointment letter) issued by the Syiem of Mylliem has expired, the court in an order said, “There are conflicting interests to be addressed as far as the averments and the prayer made in this petition is concerned, the main cause being the status of the petitioner as the Headman of Umsning Patarim village.”
“Though, it is too early in the day to come to any conclusion as to whether either of the parties could make out a case in their favour, however, at this point of time, since the petitioner, prima facie, has made out a case of apparent discrimination as far as the non-renewal of the Sanad,  vis-à-vis the other Headmen is concerned, this Court is constrained to order for stay of the election proceedings which is to be held on 30.11.2023 for the time being,” the court ordered.
The court added that it is open to the parties to approach it with any application or prayer for modification, alteration of the said interim order.
