SHILLONG, Dec 4: Well-known businessman from the city, Suresh P Singh, who was arrested recently for allegedly stabbing his wife, Poonam Yadav, will record his statement on the case with a local court on Tuesday.
The statement will be given under Section 164 CrPC, which deals with recording of confessions and statements, according to sources. It was also learnt that Singh had once again moved a bail application in the lower court on December 1. Sources said the local court has sought the case diary and the report of the Investigating Officer (IO), while hearing the bail petition of Singh on December 6.
This is the third time that the accused had moved the bail application since his arrest on November 3.
Earlier, the court will decide whether to reject or accept the bail application of the accused after perusing both the case diary and IO’s report pertaining to the case.
The District and Sessions Court had earlier rejected the bail plea of the accused due to the seriousness of the offence since there was a danger to the life of the victim considering that she was seriously injured.
At the same time, the court had remanded Singh in 14-day judicial custody. It also allowed the prayer of the investigating officer by booking the accused under two new sections of IPC. The accused is now also booked under Section 306 (punishments for attempt to murder) and Section 307 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC.
On November 3, a local court remanded Singh in seven-day judicial custody. The accused had moved a bail application on the day he was first produced in the local court after he surrendered at the Laban police station and was subsequently arrested. The bail application was opposed by both the Assistant Public Prosecutor and the investigating officer.
It may also be recalled that 19-year-old Devyani Singh, daughter of Poonam Singh, had called for the case to be handled by someone who is out of her father’s influence.
Stating that her father is the Director of Shillong Club, Shillong Golf Club and secretary of Rotary Club, she had said the police investigating the case are doing too little and too late and allegedly tried to persuade her to not pursue the case.
She alleged that her father, who had fled after stabbing her mother, broke into the house the next day, and as she hid herself behind the car, she immediately informed the police.
