Former MLA files FIR over rampant coal mining in SGH

TURA, Dec 6: An FIR filed by former Rongara-Siju MLA, Rophul S Marak has brought attention to the widespread ongoing illegal coal mining in South Garo Hills.
According to the FIR filed at the Nongalbibra police station, despite a complete state-wide ban on coal mining activities by the Supreme Court, the National Green Tribunal, and the High Court of Meghalaya, illegally extracted fresh coal is still being transported and dumped in and around Nongalbibra, Jadigittim, Garegittim, Daramngdura, and its surrounding areas.
“The High Court is currently considering PIL No. 2 of 2022 as well as other PILs. But even with the cases still pending, illegal coal mining and transportation continue, particularly in Nongalbibra and the surrounding areas,” Marak stated in the FIR.
He implored the department concerned to record the same, look into the situation, and take the necessary action against those involved in the unlawful activity.
Marak claimed that the Nokma of Garegittim A’king under Nongalbibra also filed a separate FIR at the same police station on the same day.
