Shillong, Dec 16: Meghalaya had a good first day against Mizoram in their U-16 boys’ Vijay Merchant Trophy match in Cuttack on Saturday, bowling their opponents out for 179 and then making 137/4 by the end of play.
Meghalaya will thus start today trailing by 42 runs. They got into a good position courtesy good performances with bat and ball from Dipayan Nandi and Gaurav Jyoti Thakuria respectively.
Mizoram won the toss and chose to bat first but Thakuria seriously damaged their progress with a fine haul of 5/58 in 17.1 overs. Apandanka Marak netted 2/23 in 12 and Manthan Gupta 1/38 in 12. The only real resistance was from Mizoram’s captain Peka, who hit an unbeaten 102 from 136 deliveries, which included 20 hits to the fence.
Meghalaya lost their openers fairly early on and relied on Dipayan to get their innings going. He finished the day unbeaten on 59 from 97 balls (12x4s) after finding support from Gaurav Narleng (16 from 15), Heiyomiki Ryngkhlem (26 from 53) and Thakuria (12 not out from 20).
