SHILLONG, Dec 26: Much has been said, and least done to save the water bodies of the state.
Echoing similar opinions, UDP General Secretary, Jemino Mawthoh emphasised the necessity for a comprehensive waste management plan, to make sure that the other rivers of the state do not end up like Wah Umkhrah and Wah Umshyrpi.
Owing to the alarming pollution levels across the state’s river systems, stated, “This is a cause for concern when we consider the water bodies throughout Meghalaya.”
While acknowledging the symbolic efforts of various NGOs and groups in river cleaning initiatives, Mawthoh stressed the need for a strategic and comprehensive plan speaking about the broader environmental impact.
There are also other water bodies in Meghalaya, even in suburban and rural areas, affected by pollution from human activities like mining and quarrying. Only a comprehensive mechanism for waste management, addressing collection, segregation, and disposal from households, can be a start to save the rivers of the state, he said. Mawthoh cautioned against relying on sporadic clean-up efforts, advocating for a consistently integrated waste management system.
He emphasised the need for a tailored approach, considering the hilly terrain of the state and exploring alternatives suitable for Meghalaya’s topography.
