VPP asks govt to discuss NCERT textbook move with stakeholder

SHILLONG, Dec 28: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has expressed its reservations and opposition to the recent announcement by the Meghalaya government to implement NCERT textbooks in schools starting from the next academic session.
The party has asked the government to reconsider its approach and engage in a more inclusive and deliberative process for the benefit of the education system in the state.
“While we appreciate the government’s intention to enhance the quality of school textbooks, we firmly believe that the sudden shift to NCERT textbooks without broader stakeholder consultation, particularly involving teachers, is a flawed approach,” said party spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh.
He said that while the party acknowledges the government’s motive to improve the quality of education through the adoption of NCERT textbooks from classes 1 to 10, their emphasis is on the importance of wider consultations with stakeholders, especially teachers, before implementing such a significant transition. The process should involve those directly impacted to ensure a smooth and effective integration of the new curriculum.
Stressing on the need for comprehensive collaboration, the VPP said, “The Education Minister’s assurance that NCERT textbooks will be adapted  to include local content raises concerns about the feasibility of such a task. Adapting textbooks beyond Science and Mathematics requires rigorous collaboration between the State Council of Educational Research and Training and NCERT. Developing content that reflects local nuances is not an overnight process and demands careful consideration.”
He said that while the MDA Government was firm on implementing the National Education Policy 2020, but in reality it has disregarded the Policy guidelines outlined in 4.31 and 4.32 of the NEP in the matter of using NCERT textbooks.
The VPP also expressed serious concerns about the potential consequences of adopting NCERT textbooks under the NEP.
“We highlight the need to critically examine the changes proposed, considering the historical attempts by the BJP to influence educational content. The VPP cautions against any attempt to alter the educational landscape to fit a particular ideological agenda,” he said.
While the VPP acknowledged the need to upgrade and improve school textbooks in Meghalaya, they stressed on the importance of a thorough examination and proper development of the NCERT textbooks.
“Our opposition is not against the use of NCERT textbooks per se, but we advocate for a meticulous process that prioritises the well-being and educational development of our students,” he added.
