SHILLONG, Dec 29: The state government is ready to utilise 600 km of MeECL’s optical ground wire (OPGW) to provide high-speed internet service in Meghalaya.
“We are now ready to leverage the 600 km of MeECL’s OPGW to bring reliable high-speed internet to our citizens’ doorsteps,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma wrote on X.
He also shared that the State IT Dept & PowerTel have successfully completed a trial to provide 100mbps internet at Tura using the reliable Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) on transmission lines of MeECL.
After a meeting with the officials of the IT Department earlier, the chief minister said that by 2025, all blocks and subdivisions in Meghalaya will be connected by optical fibre.
He said the government would lay optical flow lines in all the blocks for which the roadmap has been designed for implementation in a phased manner.
The government expects the work to commence in March next year, with the project set to be completed by June or July 2025.
Sangma added that after the completion of the project, any institution, organisation, or hospital can be provided with high-speed connectivity in different locations.
He stated that the project is crucial to improving e-Government overall from a public-centric perspective and in light of the government’s large-scale e-Government initiatives.
