SHILLONG, Dec 31: While the state observed U Kiang Nangbah’s 161th martyrdom day on Saturday, BJP legislator AL Hek stressed on the importance of creating awareness about the life and sacrifices of the freedom fighter, especially amongst the younger generation.
U Kiang Nangbah was a freedom fighter from the Jaintia Hills who led an uprising against the British rule, and was hanged by the British publicly at Iawmusiang in Jowai on December 30, 1862.
Hek was speaking during a special event to commemorate the death anniversary at Mebaai Resort at Umtrew in Ri-Bhoi.
He said,“It is sad that many of the young children do not know much about the life of this great freedom fighter from the State.”
He further stated that Kiang Nangbah was a common man who had fought for the liberation of his countrymen.
“The story of his bravery will always be etched in our hearts,” the BJP Cabinet Minister added.
Around 100 children from God’s Dream Children’s Home were also invited to be part of this programme, following which a small prayer meeting was also held on the occasion led by chairman of the God’s Dream Children’s Home, Rev Crosslin Marbaniang.
It may be mentioned that, a postage stamp was issued by the Government of India to commemorate the freedom fighter in 2001.
