LS polls: BJP forms panel on ground work

SHILLONG, Dec 31: State BJP has formed a committee to prepare and oversee ground work in connection with the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Informing this, senior party leader and Cabinet minister, AL Hek on Sunday said a review meeting was held on December 28 to review the preparedness for the MP elections.
Hek added that they have assigned responsibilities to various leaders in the preparation for the elections.
He said that two applicants including a woman candidate have come forward for the party ticket to contest the polls from the two parliamentary seats — Shillong and Tura.
“The ‘winnability’ factor will be one of the top priorities for allotment of the ticket,” the BJP leader said.
Hek said that he will prefer to let others contest this time since he has responsibilities to fulfil as a minister.
He, however, said, “I am ready to contest if there is a directive from the party leadership.”
Making known his personal views, Hek said that he personally wants the party to field women candidates from both the parliamentarian seats, while insisting that female candidates would be better for the party.
“If there are any potential women candidates, the party should field them from both Shillong and Tura seats,” the BJP leader said.
Asked if he would like to view for the Shillong seat, Hek reiterated that it depends on BJP central leadership’s discretion.
The BJP minister said the party at the state level is identifying candidates for both the seats, adding that the final decision is the prerogative of the central leadership of BJP.
