SHILLONG, Dec 31: The political parties in Meghalaya are eyeing 2024, an election year, as 365 days of opportunities.
Marcuise N Marak, the working president of the NPP, which heads the government, said his party would try to serve the people better.
“We have consistently strived to provide the best services to our citizens under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma. In the coming year, we are committed to addressing a wide range of issues faced by the people in every nook and corner of our state,” he said.
“Our resolutions are to continue our dedicated efforts to enhancing the well-being of the people of our constituents, ensuring a better quality of life for all,” Marak said.
United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh said, “The UDP, which is an offshoot of the APHLC, will continue to endeavour to unify and articulate the issues and concerns of the people of the state.”
He said the UDP, after securing more seats in the last Assembly, is looking forward to strengthening its grassroots organisation and is hopeful to win the Lok Sabha election and increase its number in the District Council elections.
“More importantly, the UDP as a major partner of the MDA Government, will strive to give the much-needed support and contribute to the overall development of the state and remain steadfast in its commitment to serve the people inspite of the challenges that lies ahead. The party wishes the people of the state peace, progress and a better future,” Mawthoh said.
The BJP seeks to ensure last-mile delivery of the central schemes. Party spokesperson, Mariahom Kharkrang said, “We have resolved to reach out to the people with various central schemes of PM Narendra Modi through the Viksit Bharat campaign.”
Leader of the Opposition and Congress veteran, Ronnie V Lyngdoh said, “We are looking at protection democracy, the right to freedom of speech, the right to freedom of expression and to ensure work for the prosperity of the people of the state, peaceful co-existence of divergent people.”
He said Congress believes in pluralism and protecting what the country’s founding fathers fought for.
The VPP, on the other hand, said it would continue to take on the government on people-centric issues.
VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said, “We will take the MDA government head on when it comes to corruption. This government is known to break the laws to indulge in corruption.”
He cited the “disregard” for the order of the National Green Tribunal and the High Court of Meghalaya (on illegal coal mining and transportation) as well as the termination of the services of Lokayukta officers.
Wishing the citizens a prosperous New Year, Trinamool Congress leader George B Lyngdoh said, “May 2024 bring good tidings to the people of the state and the country and as we move towards the general elections, we hope that the people will use their wisdom to elect a government that will work for their benefit and ensure peace, prosperity, brotherhood, and mutual respect for all religions and sections of the society.”
