SHILLONG, Jan 6: The issue of congested roads persists, with limited efforts to address the problem.
Despite frequent traffic jams, peculiarly, some roads have been transformed into makeshift parking lots, exacerbating the congestion.
Notably, near Harijan Colony on the way to GS Road, a once-designated space for two-wheelers has evolved into an unauthorized parking area as youth collect fees from parked vehicles, using outdated parking tickets repeatedly.
The parked two-wheelers encroach upon the road itself, contributing to the traffic snarl.
Similarly, Butcher Road, connecting GS Road with Rhino Point, faces a similar challenge. Although being a reasonably sized road, vehicles are frequently parked along its length, with unauthorised individuals collecting parking fees.
Even in the spacious Khyndailad area, parking is allowed on both sides of the road, adding to the peculiarities.
Designated stops for local taxis exist, alongside an area exclusively reserved for VIPs and government vehicles, and a similar problem also exists in the stretch from Motphran to Lumdiengjri, where private vehicles occupy the space, and taxi and bus stand encroach upon the road.
Despite the road’s adequacy for two-way traffic, it has persistently functioned as a one-way street.
