SHILLONG, Jan 8: The hundreds of tourist taxis flowing in and out of the city serve as the lifeline for tourists navigating into and around the city’s attractions. However, a pressing concern arises due to the lack of designated parking areas for these taxis, compelling drivers to circle and park on the roadside.
The once-existing age-old taxi stand near Khyndailad, present around ten years ago, has been dismantled. Since then, taxi drivers have been left waiting for a designated taxi stand.
A driver suggested that the Meghalaya Government should emulate the approach of the Assam government, where an entire stretch of road, coupled with a parking lot, is designated as a tourist taxi stand for vehicles heading to Shillong. “Here, we don’t have such a parking lot, and hence we have to move around with the vehicle all the time,” expressed a driver.
He added that having a proper parking place would not only benefit drivers but also passengers, offering them the convenience of finding vehicles for Guwahati at one designated location.
