State athletes shine in Wushu League

Shillong, Jan 9: In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Meghalaya Wushu Association (MWA) fielded a team of seventeen female athletes, led by President Danny R. Ranee, Coach Lorenza Songthiang, and Manager Jessica Kharumnuid, at the recently concluded East Zonal Khelo India Wushu Women’s League held in Assam, Kokrajhar, in December 2024.
The Meghalaya Wushu contingent distinguished itself by clinching honors for the state, securing 1 Silver medal and 5 Bronze Medals. The Silver Medal was earned by Hammylienki Dkhar in the Sanshou event (52 kg), while the Bronze Medals were claimed by Sesilia Dkhar (45 kg Junior), Rijanai Ryndong (48 kg Junior), and Ibalakordor Umdor (70 kg Senior), hailing from East Jaintia Hills District and East Khasi Hills District, respectively.
Additionally, two Bronze Medals were garnered in the Taolu Event, with Balakynshew Lyngdoh from Ri-Bhoi District excelling in Changquan, and Espiranza Songthiang from East Khasi Hills District showcasing her skills in Tal-Chỉ Quan.
The outstanding performance of the Meghalaya Wushu Team is further underscored by the fact that among the 17 athletes who participated in the Women’s Wushu League, nine athletes secured a position in the top 8.
This impressive feat qualifies them to represent Meghalaya in the upcoming All India Khelo India Championship slated for 2024, adding another feather to the cap of the state’s flourishing Wushu talents
