Global South is about a mindset, says Jaishankar
Lagos (Nigeria), Jan 22: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said Global South is about a “mindset, a solidarity and a self-reliance”. Addressing the Nigerian Institute Of International Affairs (NIIA) here on India and the Global South, he said the global agenda today is on promoting rebalancing and multipolarity, thereby restoring the world to its natural diversity. “Contemporary challenges emanate from old forms of domination as well as new economic concentration…Global South is about a mindset, a solidarity and a self-reliance,” Jaishankar said. The transformation over the last decade, the minister said, has “enabled India to be an example, a partner and a contributor”. Jaishankar arrived in Nigeria in the concluding leg of his two-nation tour to Uganda and Nigeria. He arrived in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sunday after attending the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Uganda. (PTI)

47 buried in China’s landslide
Beijing, Jan 22: A total of 47 people were buried in a landslide that struck southwest China’s Yunnan Province early Monday. More than 200 rescuers together with 33 firefighting vehicles and 10 loading machines were combing the debris to search for the missing, after the disaster happened in the Liangshui Village, Tangfang Town in the city of Zhaotong at 5:51 a.m. on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported. The buried villagers were from 18 households, according to the headquarters for the disaster relief. More than 200 residents were evacuated as the provincial commission for disaster reduction activated a Level-III emergency response for disaster relief. Local weather forecast said there will be light snow in the town on Tuesday, with the lowest temperature expected to reach minus three degrees Celsius. Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an all-out search and rescue of the people missing in the landslide. “[We should] promptly organise rescue teams, make all-out efforts to search for missing individuals, and minimise casualties to the greatest extent possible,” Xi was quoted as saying in the Xinhua report. Chinese Premier Li Qiang also ordered an all-out rescue effort and emphasised the need to maintain social stability in light of the area’s ethnic diversity. (Agencies)

Five killed in shooting in Sri Lanka
Colombo, Jan 22: Five persons were killed in a shooting incident on Monday morning in Beliatta in Southern Province of Sri Lanka, police said. Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said the incident occurred near the Beliatta interchange on the Southern Expressway. Four people were killed on the spot, while another died upon admission to the hospital, he said as reported by Xinhua news agency. The shooting took place around 7:45 a.m. local time (0215 GMT) when an unidentified group, traveling in a vehicle, opened fire at another group in a jeep, he said. The Sri Lankan police suspect that the shooting was carried out by members of organised criminal gangs. Sri Lanka has launched an operation since Dec. 17 to curb drug trafficking and organised criminal activities, with over 40,000 suspects being arrested as of last week. (IANS)
