SHILLONG, Jan 24: The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to set different minimum and upper age limits for recruitment to government service in four departments in view of the physical nature of work requiring stamina and vigour.
The four departments are Civil Defence and Home Guards (CG&HG), Excise Registration Taxation and Stamps (ERTS), Forest and Environment, and Home (police).
Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh told reporters after the Cabinet meeting that the minimum age in these departments is in the range of 18 to 21 years while the upper age limit is 27 years in the ERTS, 32 years in CD&HG, and 30 to 32 years in the Forest and Environment department.
The minimum age has been fixed at 21 years in the Home (police) department while the upper age limit is 27 years. “We will soon come up with the advertisements for the recruitment to the vacant posts in these departments in the next two to three weeks,” Lyngdoh, also the MDA II government spokesperson said.
He said about 3,000 vacant posts in the Home (police) and some 500 posts in the CD&HG department need to be filled up. Filling up these posts will address the problem of manpower shortage, he added.
Replying to a query, he said the manpower deficit is a major concern and the government needs younger people to serve in the vacant posts.
The Cabinet also approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Finance Service Rules of 1989 to ensure uniformity.
“There is a need to incorporate these rules since there are a number of departments following their own office memorandums, which are yet to be regularized,” Lyngdoh said.
The Cabinet approved the draft speech of the Republic Day celebration too.
