Shillong, February 8: In a move to ensure security during the national elections, Pakistan has closed its borders with neighboring Iran and Afghanistan. The closure, affecting both cargo and pedestrians, is set for Thursday (February 8), with regular operations expected to resume on Friday, as reported by local media citing Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch.

As per IANS, responding to concerns raised by the UN rights office regarding election security, Baloch assured on Wednesday that security plans had been finalized in accordance with Pakistan’s electoral laws. She emphasized that the country’s judicial system upholds fair trial and due process, with domestic legal remedies available for any complaints arising during the electoral process, as detailed in The Nation.

The security measures come in the wake of twin terrorist attacks in Pishin and Qilla Saifullah in Balochistan province on Wednesday, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries. The closure of borders is seen as a precautionary step to maintain order and safety during the elections.
