Guwahati, Feb 13: The Assam government on Tuesday declared Kaji Nemu (Citrus Lemon), known for its unique aroma and antioxidant properties, as the “State Fruit of Assam”.

Grown throughout the year across Assam and exported to several countries, the fruit had earlier received a GI tag and has two main harvesting seasons – spring (February-March) and autumn (September-October).

According to official data, the fruit is cultivated across 15.90 hectares of land, with an average annual yield surpassing 1.58 lakh metric tons.

“Our government has decided to declare Kaji Nemu (Citrus Limon) as the State Fruit of Assam. With its unique aroma and antioxidant properties, Assam lemon has enriched our local cuisines. With today’s announcement, it is set to shine on the global fruit map, boosting self-dependency and production,” Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on microblogging platform, X.

The announcement of the decision, taken during the Cabinet meeting, was made by state agriculture minister Atul Bora in the Assam Assembly on Tuesday. The minister also highlighted the fruit’s potential to boost immunity and enhance the flavour of various dishes.

“Delighted to share that Assam’s Kaji Nemu (Citrus Limon), known for its unique aroma and flavour, has been declared as the “State Fruit” by the Cabinet. Grateful to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for this visionary move. Excited about the prospects this initiative holds for our farmers and the agricultural sector,” Bora stated on X.
