SHILLONG, Feb 12: A tussle ensued on Monday after a group of vendors who had set up stalls at the scenic Umiam viewpoint located along the G.S Road in Ri-Bhoi, were evicted on Monday.
The High Court of Meghalaya had recently prohibited any activity in the vicinity of Umiam Lake.
The group of vendors selling tea stalls, chips and fruits had set up their stalls in the area notwithstanding the prohibition order by the Dorbar Shnong of Mawiongrim.
Upon receiving this information, the Rangbah Shnong of Mawiongrim, Sorbar L Nongpiur, reached viewpoint to stop the vendors from operating their businesses. This intervention led to a heated argument between the Dorbar Shnong members and the vendors, which eventually needed the intervention by the Mawlai Police to quell the commotion.
According to the Dorbar Shnong, the prohibition on vendors setting up stalls at the viewpoint area was necessitated due to unhygienic waste disposal from the stalls and numerous complaints in this regard from the area.
They stated that the vendors not only set up their stalls in prohibited areas designated by the Dorbar but also contravene an order by the High Court.
