Shillong, Feb 14: Shillong Lajong FC emerged victorious in their final group stage encounter of the All India Football Federation’s U-17 Youth League, triumphing 4-1 over Aizawl FC at the First Ground, Polo, on Wednesday.
The victory solidifies Lajong’s position in Group C, securing the second spot with a commendable tally of 14 points from eight matches. This achievement marks a significant turnaround for the team, considering their initial struggles that had placed them at the bottom of the table during the first leg of matches.
In a display of remarkable performance, Banlamkupar Rynjah (28’), Ricky Kharkongor (50’, 55’), and Riborlang Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi (83’) found the back of the net for Lajong, while Christopher Zaithantluanga (81’) managed to score a consolation goal for Aizawl.
This victory adds to Lajong’s previous success against Aizawl in the first leg of the league. Prior to this crucial match, both teams were tied on 11 points, but Lajong’s convincing win has elevated them above their opponents. However, leading the pack in Group C is Manipur’s Football 4 Change Academy, securing the top spot with 16 points despite suffering a 2-1 defeat against NorthEast United FC in their final match. As a result, NorthEast United FC ascended to the third position with 12 points.
On the flip side, the bottom position in Group C has been claimed by Harisinga Town Club of Assam, managing to accumulate only 3 points throughout the league campaign.
These fixtures marked the culmination of the group stage matches in the Youth League, comprising a total of 10 groups with participation from 54 teams across the country. As teams now prepare for the subsequent stages of the tournament, the competition promises to intensify as the quest for the coveted title continues.
