Guwahati, Feb 22: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) organized a conference on Yuvamanthan Model United Nations for India@2047 here on Tuesday for the students. It was organized as per UGC guideline on Yuva Manthan connecting ‘Viksit Bharat @2047: Voice of Youth’ and “Igniting India’s Journey to 2047: Vision of Developed India”.
The conference was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor of USTM Prof. G D Sharma, in the presence of Jangjilong, Regional Director, NSS; N C Deori, Youth Officer, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Govt of India and F Rumnong, State Nodal Officer Education Department, Government of Meghalaya.
Titled “Disasters and Mitigation with Special Emphasis on North East India”, the conference was significant in bringing together students to discuss the current situation of disasters in the region and ways to mitigate their impact. One of the key objectives of the conference was to create awareness among the youths about the various disasters that the North East region is vulnerable
to and the necessary precautions that can be taken to minimize the impact involving students. There was a serious effort to educate the youths on disaster preparedness, timely evacuation, post-disaster response, and recovery.
The conference highlighted the challenges faced by the North East region in terms of disaster management and explored potential solutions. Dr. Samikhu Changmai, Assistant Professor, Department of Earth Science, was one of the key speakers of the conference. More than 250 students participated in the conference and certificates of achievement and participation was given to 6 identified students based on performance. Dr Amilia Nonget was coordinator of the conference and the vote of thanks was given by Adul Wadud SK.
