Shillong, Feb 26: Meghalaya’s football fraternity is abuzz with pride as local talent Bonifilia Shullai secures her position in the Indian squad for the upcoming SAFF U-16 Women’s Championship. The announcement, made by the All India Football Federation on Monday, marks a significant achievement for the state.
Having been initially shortlisted as one of the 30 probables earlier this month, Bonifilia has now clinched a spot in the final squad of 23 players set to represent India in Lalitpur, Nepal, from March 1-10.
Following a rigorous selection trial, the probables underwent intensive training in Goa, from which the final squad was meticulously curated. The Young Tigresses, as they are affectionately known, are slated to embark on their journey to Nepal on Tuesday in preparation for the championship.
This edition of the tournament holds particular significance as it marks the inaugural U-16 format, expanding the competitive landscape for budding talents in the region. Notably, India has previously emerged victorious in the SAFF U-15 Women’s Championship, clinching the title in 2018 and 2019 by defeating Bangladesh in the finals.Bonifilia Shullai’s journey to national recognition is a testament to her unwavering dedication and prowess on the field. Prior to her selection, she showcased her skills in local leagues such as the Baby League and Children’s League in Shillong, where her exceptional performance earned her the title of Most Promising Player at the State Level Chief Minister’s Football Tournament in 2019.
In 2022, she further honed her craft by joining the Bengaluru FC U-15 girls’ team, followed by a stint with Garhwal FC in the Football Delhi Women’s Premier League later that year. Additionally, Bonifilia is affiliated with the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools, where she continues to refine her skills under expert guidance.
As the countdown to the championship begins, the Indian contingent, led by talents like Bonifilia Shullai, is poised to showcase their mettle on the international stage. The squad’s itinerary includes pivotal matches against Bhutan on March 1, Bangladesh on March 5, and Nepal on March 7, with the top two teams from the round-robin stage advancing to the final showdown.
All eyes are now on the Chyasal Stadium in Lalitpur, Nepal, where these young athletes will strive to etch their names in the annals of Indian football history with their exemplary performance and unwavering determination.
