Bengal BJP chief’s car meets with accident
KOLKATA, March 3: West Bengal BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar narrowly escaped injury when his car collided with a police barricade on NH-34 in Shantipur, Nadia district, on Sunday, police said.Majumdar said the accident took place while his car was trying to overtake a bus, which was obstructing a side of the highway. Three persons in the pilot car sustained injuries, he said.“As the bus was blocking a side of the highway, my car tried to overtake it and collided with a guard rail put up on the same side by police. I escaped unhurt but three occupants of my pilot car suffered injuries,” Majumdar, the Balurghat MP, said.Majumdar, who was fielded by the party from Balurghat Lok Sabha seat for the second time, was returning from a football tournament where he was the chief guest.He demanded an inquiry to determine if there was any conspiracy to target opposition BJP leaders in the state.A police official attributed the accident to ongoing road repair works along the stretch, with the bus partly obstructing one side of the road.Meanwhile, the BJP’s West Bengal unit shared an image of two cars, including the police pilot vehicle, claiming that Majumdar was the victim of a life-threatening attack as the pilot car, allegedly partisan to the TMC, collided with his car at high speed.“Majumdar was saved due to the support of people of Bengal. The injured security personnel were admitted to a hospital,” the party said on X. (PTI)

3 produced before court in Spanish tourist’s gang rape
DUMKA, March 3: Three persons who were arrested in connection with the gang rape of a Spanish tourist in Jharkhand’s Dumka district were produced before a court on Sunday.The woman from Spain was allegedly gang-raped at Kurumahat in Hansdiha police station area, around 300 km from the state capital Ranchi, on Friday night when she was spending the night in a tent along with her husband, police said.Dumka’s Deputy Commissioner A Dodde said, “The embassy and chief secretary have been informed. The couple are under protection here.” The woman, aged around 28, and her 64-year-old husband reached Dumka from Bangladesh on two motorcycles, and were en route to Nepal via Bihar. (PTI)

Charred bodies of couple found in UP
SONBHADRA (UP), March 3: The charred bodies of a couple, who had eloped in 2022 to get married, were found in a forest area in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district.The bodies were found on Saturday. The police suspect that the couple-Pankaj Chauhan,25,and Bandani Chauhan,20,-committed suicide.Additional Superintendent of Police Tribhuvan Nath Tripathi said police recovered items near the bodies that suggested the duo might have consumed poison before setting themselves on fire. What prompted them to take the extreme step is being investigated.The incident came to light when residents of Sirsiya Thakurai village spotted smoke billowing from nearby Thakurai jungle.They rushed to the spot and alerted the police on seeing the bodies. The couple desired to get married, but their families opposed the union. (IANS)
