SHILLONG, March 12: The All India Trinamool Congress on Tuesday named former Cabinet minister and party leader Zenith M Sangma as the party candidate for the Tura Lok Sabha seat.
Zenith is the brother of former chief minister and Meghalaya TMC Parliamentary Party leader, Mukul M Sangma.
In a post on X, TMC said, “AITC under the guidance and inspiration of Hon’ble Chairperson Smt. @MamataOfficial, we are pleased to announce the @AITC4Meghalaya candidate from the Parliamentary Constituency of Tura (ST) seat.”
Zenith had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly election from the Rangsakona seat in 2023, losing to National People’s Party candidate Subir Marak.
The party, however, did not make any announcement with regard to the Shillong seat.
With Zenith’s entry, the prestigious Tura Parliamentary seat will now witness a multi-cornered contest. The NPP has fielded sitting Lok Sabha member Agatha Sangma while the Congress has announced the name of its sitting MLA from Gambegre, Saleng Sangma as the party candidate.
The BJP is also poised to contest the Tura seat, although the saffron party is yet to take a call on the name of its candidate from among multiple ticket aspirants.
