Shillong, March 12: After a delay, the much-awaited Shillong Premier League 2023 season is set to commence on March 18th, as per the schedule unveiled by the Shillong Sports Association (SSA) on Wednesday.
The inaugural match will witness Nongthymmai SC, promoted from the previous First Division, facing off against last season’s SPL runners-up, Rangdajied United FC, at the First Ground, Polo, Shillong. The matches are slated to start at 3 PM.
In a departure from tradition, this year’s SPL will be a single-leg affair instead of the usual two. Additionally, there will be no relegation, potentially leading some clubs to adopt a more relaxed approach. However, the competition for the title, accompanied by the lucrative Rs 3 lakh prize money, is expected to remain fierce, with top teams vying for a berth in the prestigious Meghalaya State League, either through direct qualification or a playoff spot.
Sawmer SC, making a return to the SPL, will take on Nangkiew Irat SC on the second day of the league. Following this match, there will be a brief hiatus as the ground will be utilized for an I-League encounter between NEROCA and TRAU on March 21.
On March 22, fans can look forward to an exciting clash between four-time champions Shillong Lajong FC and twice victors Langsning FC. Given Lajong’s concurrent participation in the I-League, it is anticipated that they may field a junior team, at least initially, for the SPL fixtures.
Wrapping up the first round, defending champions Mawlai SC are slated to lock horns with Ryntih SC on the subsequent day.
As anticipation builds for the commencement of the SPL 2023 season, football enthusiasts across Shillong and beyond eagerly await the unfolding drama and spectacle that each match promises to deliver.
With the stage set and teams raring to go, the SPL is poised to captivate audiences and showcase the immense talent and passion for the beautiful game prevalent in the region.
