Guwahati, March 25: The conviction rate of accused criminals in Assam has marked a steady rise to 21.65 percent until the end of February 2024.
In the year 2018, the conviction rate in the state was just 5.9 percent (1834 conviction cases) followed by a marginal increase in 2019 to 6.9 percent and then again, a decline in 2020 (5.5 percent). However, there has been a steady increase in the conviction rate from 6.1 percent (in 2021), 13.5 percent in 2022, 16.75 percent in 2023 and 21.65 percent up to February 2024.
“Monthly State Crime review for Assam for February 2024 was held on March 22 at the Assam Police headquarters in a hybrid mode where Assam CID Range Officers, district SPs, ASP crime participated. The conviction rate in the state has seen a steady rise to 21.65 percent,” Assam director general of police Gyanendra Pratap Singh informed, while sharing the data on the microblogging site, X.
The number of conviction cases in 2023 was stated to be 4835, while in the first two months of this year, the number of conviction cases stands at 902.
However, the conviction rate in the state is still low when compared to the national level. According to data shared by the DGP, the all-India conviction rate was as high as 73.4 percent in 2020, 68.8 percent in 2021 and 65.7 percent in 2022.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had last year said that the conviction rate in the state would rise to 50 percent by the year 2026.
“We are improving all the relevant activities and by 2026, the conviction rate against criminal activities will reach up to 50 percent, which will be closer to the national ratio,” the chief minister had said last year.
