SHILLONG, March 25: The Package 1 of the Shillong-Dawki Road project includes two bypasses for which work is going on simultaneously.
The work of Package 1, which is a four-lane project, is going on smoothly.
One of the bypasses is coming up 3rd Mile area and the length of it will be 1.9 km. The second is being built at 8th Mile and the length of it will be 2.9 km.
Officials said the bypass at 3rd Mile was needed to avoid traffic congestion while the other was conceived to avoid a market.
Meanwhile, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) wants the state government to grant necessary permissions so that it can go ahead with work at the Western Bypass.
It is a greenfield alignment and everything has to start from scratch.
The NHIDCL has already provided money to the state government for the acquisition of land.
The government has distributed around 40 per cent of land compensation for Package 1, around 80 per cent for Package 2 and around 60 per cent for Package 3.
“We want the government to give necessary permissions so that we can move ahead with the work of agreement, signing etc,” an NHIDCL official said.
Recently, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways sanctioned Rs 681.63 crore as land compensation for the two-lane Shillong Western Bypass Road from Umsaw in Ri-Bhoi to Lad Mawreng in East Khasi Hills.
A two-year deadline has been set for the completion of the work of the 38.256 km road project.
