SHILLONG, March 31: The KSU on Sunday shut down several banks across Khasi and Jaintia Hills which were open on Easter Sunday.
The KSU had resented banks remaining open on Easter Sunday, which is an important day for Christians to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The KSU members asked the banks to immediately shut down.
KSU’s information and publicity secretary, Pynshai Rani, has slammed the NPP-led MDA and NDA government at the Centre for failing to respect the sentiments of the Christian community by allowing the banks to open on Easter Sunday.
According to Rani, the banking institutions in other Northeastern states like Nagaland and Mizoram are given holidays on Easter Sunday despite being the last date of a financial year. “We request banks to respect the significant festival of the Christians,” he said.
The union shut down a few of the banks located in Mawlai Mawiong, Mawprem, Stand Jeep, Garikhana, Upper Shillong, Mawkhar, Khyndai Lad, Barik, Malki, Laitumkhrah and Nongmensong.
