NONGPOH, March 31: Ri-Bhoi district faced the wrath of nature on Sunday as a cyclonic storm unleashed chaos in several areas, causing widespread destruction. Among the hardest-hit areas were Umshalani and Umsaliang villages, nestled within the Jirang Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Block.
Reports from the scene depict scenes of devastation, with approximately 44 houses were damaged by the powerful storm. One individual, identified as Khuni Killing, suffered injuries during the calamity, further highlighting the severity of the situation.
The Block Development Officer of Jirang C&RD Block, Dr Pabitra R Hajong, confirmed the extent of the damage, relying on information provided by village headmen.
He also informed that besides the two villages, reports also received that Nongrim Jirang village was also affected in the incident.
In addition to the structural damage, fallen trees also blocked the road leading to Umsaliang village, hindering access and exacerbating the challenges faced by affected communities. As a result, impacted households from these villages were directed to seek shelter in nearby school buildings as relief efforts swung into action.
Efforts are currently under way to assess the total damages incurred and provide assistance to those affected.
Officials from the Block Office are actively engaged in relief operations, striving to provide relief and support to the impacted residents during this trying time.
