SHILLONG, April 1: SAN-KER organised a special programme called ‘Expression through Art’ on Monday at its premises in Mawlai Mawroh to raise awareness about autism.
Two prominent artists of the state, Benedict Skhemlang Hynniewta and Jaya Kalra, attended as special guests to inspire the young children from various special schools participating in the art competition.
In addition, SAN-KER will host a walk for Autism on World Autism Awareness Day, observed annually on April 2, to promote understanding of autism as a growing global health concern. The walk will commence from Khyndai Lad and conclude at the Mission Compound Community Hall, followed by a public discussion at 11 am.
Dr Dida Khonglah, a consulting psychiatrist at SAN-KER, explained that the organization included children with autism in the activities.
She emphasised that these children are showcasing their talent and emotions through colors, with one of this year’s themes being “Colour.”
Jaya Kalra remarked that, as an artist, she can interpret the paintings and understand the colours and objects depicted by the children.
She noted that individuals with autism often express themselves more effectively through art than verbally. Benedict Skhemlang Hynniewta highlighted the importance of such events in boosting the confidence and providing encouragement to these specially-abled children. He emphasised that creative outlets offer these children a platform to express themselves.
