SHILLONG, April 2: Against the backdrop of the recent scuffle between groups at NEHU and the ensuing brouhaha, pressure group Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has warned the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and World Organisation of Students and Youth (WOSY) to tread carefully and not use NEHU for allegedly advancing their ‘political agendas’ thereby creating communal tensions inside the University.
“We will not allow people or groups with vested interests to spoil the name of NEHU and our state as a whole as NEHU has traditionally not allowed such groups to take part in the students’ politics till date. And we would like to see that the status quo remains for years to come,” HYC education secretary, Enlang Sawian said on Tuesday.
He observed that they were informed that the ABVP, a student wing of the BJP, is trying its best to infiltrate the campus by using its outfit called the World Organisation of Students and Youths as well as holding programe in collaboration with the Rashtriya Seva Sangh (RSS), like the one which was reportedly stopped by HYC recently.
The HYC education secretary said that the so-called celebration of the festival of Holi inside the campus by WOSY in collaboration with ABVP/RSS members is “nothing but an attempt to communalise the festival and politicise the same.”
According to him, in all these years, the students and faculty members as well as staff of NEHU have been holding such festivals in their individual capacity and there was no objection.
“But celebrating such festival with a motive to communalise and politicise the same cannot be accepted by HYC. We were also informed that no permission was granted to WOSY for such event and to celebrate the same with people who are not students of the University inside the campus. As such, we fully support the stand taken by the office-bearers of NEHUSU and condemned the action of all those involved in the assault of the vice president of NEHUSU,” the HYC leader said.
Meanwhile, Sawian has urged upon the Police department to take prompt and necessary action to book the culprits involved in the case of assault as per relevant sections of law and also urged upon the authorities of NEHU to take appropriate action against the organisers of that particular programme.
He added that the HYC is “very mindful of the fact that ABVP is trying to make inroads into NEHU campuses both in Tura and Shillong with an objective of spreading politics of hate and creating communal tensions by using WOSY, as it cannot make inroads by itself.”
He alleged that the ABVP is trying to empower “objectionable people to penetrate the campus and play their dirty politics in the University.”
