SHILLONG, April 29: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has assured that all the culprits who were involved in the assault and gang-rape of two minor girls at the Chenga Benga Mela in South West Garo Hills on April 17 would be brought to justice.
NCPCR chairperson, Priyank Kanoongo posted a video on X, informing of his meeting with the family members of the two minor survivors on Sunday to investigate the complaints of the gang-rape.
“We will make sure that all the culprits are brought to justice and such matters are not repeated. We will recommend it in our report which will be sent to both the state and the central government,” Kanoongo said.
He further stated that as per his sources and information, he had learnt that the perpetrators might be Rohingya infiltrators.
The NCPCR chief said the culprits not only snatched phones and tried to loot victims, but committed a heinous crime of gang-raping minors, and half of them have not been caught yet.
So far, nine persons have been arrested in connection with the case. Police said more arrests are likely to be made in the coming days.
All the arrested persons are residents of Teporpara village in Assam, located near the crime scene.
