Tura, May 6: The inaugural Meghalaya FIDE-rated State-level Championship is all set to unfold in Tura this June, courtesy of the Garo Hills Chess Association (GHCA).
The decision to host this prestigious event was reached during the GHCA’s recent general meeting, held this past Sunday. Notably, the Meghalaya Chess Association had earlier entrusted Tura with the privilege of hosting the state championship earlier this year.
This championship carries significant weight, as the top four contenders will earn the honor of representing Meghalaya in the upcoming senior Nationals scheduled for August in Haryana.
Alongside this exciting development, the GHCA underwent a reshuffle in leadership during the meeting. Jesse James R. Marak steps into the role of president, with Challangga D. Sangma and Harlowe Sangma assuming the positions of vice presidents. Tengrang R. Sangma takes on the responsibilities of General Secretary, alongside Ezekiel Momin and Zeffyar Sangma as Joint Secretaries. Silberth Marak assumes the dual role of Organising Secretary cum Treasurer, while Tartush R. Marak will serve as the Accountant and Silkam A. Sangma as the Media and Publicity Secretary.
Furthermore, former President Wilseng G. Marak and Secretary Francis A. Sangma have been appointed as Advisors to the Association, adding their wealth of experience and guidance to the esteemed body.
