SHILLONG, May 6: St. Edmund’s College Model United Nations (SECMUN) club hosted the ‘SECMUN Conference 4.0’, focusing on the theme ‘Diplomatic Outreach for Global Peace,’ on Monday.
The event, which marked a decade of diplomatic engagement for peace, was inaugurated by Brother Solomon Morris, Principal of St. Edmund’s College.
Morris highlighted the importance of the programme in fostering various skills among participants. SECMUN’s mission, reiterated during the opening ceremony, emphasised its commitment to addressing global challenges and promoting unity, diversity, and international peace and prosperity.
The opening ceremony started off with a welcome speech by Shubhankar Sharmah, faculty in-charge of SECMUN Club followed by the inauguration of the first edition of the SECMUN magazine titled ‘THE Ed-MUN-Dian DIPLOMACY’ by the student president of the Club, Ankit Bhattarai. This was followed by a speech by the secretary general of the Club, Kashyapi Bezbaruah.
The two-day conference is featuring five committees that include, All India Political Parties Meet (AIPPM), Disarmament and International Security (DISEC), United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW), United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and a split committee focusing on United Nations Correspondents Association, with divisions for Journalism and Photo Journalism.
The executive board comprised experienced members from across the country, while the anticipation for nationwide delegate participation was high, given the success and support garnered in previous editions.
The first day of the conference included a carnival, showcasing cultural diversity through food stalls offering various cuisines, as well as exhibitions of art, crafts, dance, and music.
