LR Bishnoi to retire on May 19
SHILLONG, May 7: The state government is likely to appoint 1992 batch IPS officer, Idashisha Nongrang as the officiating Director General of Police after incumbent DGP, Lajja Ram Bishnoi demits office on May 19. Nongrang is currently posted as Director General, Meghalaya Civil Defence & Home Guards.
Home Secretary Cyril VD Diengdoh on Tuesday addressed a letter to the various head of the state, stating that: “On completion of two years’ term in the office of the DGP (head of police force), Meghalaya, duly notified vide No. HPL.252/2012/Pt/162 dated December 2, 2022, Lajja Ram Bishnoi, IPS (RR 1991) shall demit office with effect from May 19, 2024.”
It was also informed that the State Security Commission will not sit to decide the name of the next DGP as the state and the country are currently under the model code of conduct in view of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Earlier, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had recommended three names for appointment as DGP of Meghalaya.
The list includes the names of Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch) RP Meena (1993) and Deepak Kumar (1994).
The state government had sent two more names to the UPSC for consideration but both candidates —GP Singh (1991 batch) and Harmeet Singh (1992) — expressed their unwillingness to take up the responsibility.
Nongrang had earlier taken over as acting DGP in December 2021, following the retirement of the then state police chief, R Chandranathan.
