SHILLONG, May 17: The retaining wall of the under-construction new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang collapsed on Friday.
The wall was constructed not very long ago.
“I had sent my staff. They found that a portion of the boundary wall, which was constructed way below the Assembly building, collapsed. If I am not mistaken, it was constructed about three years ago,” Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma said.
He said the work was divided in several parts and allotted to several contractors and as such, he was not sure who among them had carried out the work. He also said that payment was made much before he had taken over.
The incident comes nearly two years after the Assembly building dome had collapsed on May 22, 2022.
After carrying out a probe, the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati had stated in its report that dead weight and the lack of coordination between the designers and the contractors working on the project were the reasons behind the dome’s collapse.
The project was designed by the Design Associates Inc. It is being implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd.
